A fair comparison begins with the work you need completed. Use the same inputs, expected outputs and review criteria across tools instead of choosing a different showcase prompt for each product.

A practical example

For an internal-document assistant, select a policy question, a missing-answer case and a question about an outdated document. Ask a reviewer to assess the outputs without knowing which tool produced them. Record whether the answer was correct and how much work checking it required.

What to check

  • Use approved sample material that represents ordinary and difficult tasks.
  • Record corrections and review effort as part of the total workflow.
  • Review retention, export and access settings before using confidential information.

The trade-off

An inexpensive subscription may still be costly when outputs require substantial repair. Conversely, a modest improvement in a frequently repeated task can be useful even when the demonstration looks less spectacular.

Research context

NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework resources support evaluation and management of AI risks. They can inform a trial checklist but do not rank commercial tools or guarantee their performance.
